WELCOME TO CORTES ISLAND & RED GRANITE GETAWAY Some information and suggestions to make your stay as comfortable as possible. |
Cottage water Our water comes from a deep well and is very drinkable (and is tested annually) - no need to use bottled water. |
Please keep your dogs on leashes at all times. |
Local wildlife and seafood Our area has lots of deer, squirrels, mink, and an amazing variety of birds. Don’t be alarmed if you hear hooves on the deck at night - the deer are very tame around here.
The local oysters and clams are fine to eat, with the exception of butter clams, which are closed. Please return oyster shells to the beach; their babies are attached. Never cook oysters on the barbecue - it will wreck it. Remember- you must have a valid fishing licence to collect shellfish. |
Island Hotspots Cortes Island has 1000 (approx.) year-round residents, scattered all over the island. There is no central town, but several wide spots in the roads. At Manson’s Landing, you will find a community hall, post office, General Store, Fire Hall, bank, ATM machine, restaurant and burger stand. Squirrel Cove has a General Store, restaurant, laundry facilities and gift shop. The Whaletown area has a General Store and post office. Gorgeview Marina has a restaurant, General Store and laundry facilities. Linnaea Farm has organic produce. I’ll try to remember to post the weekly Cortes Marketer (available at Cortes Market at Manson’s Landing) to let you know about any upcoming events. |
Television and VCR The TV is on a satellite system. Remote controls are in the living room credenza drawer. Recent videos can be rented from Cortes Market, Squirrel Cove, and the Whaletown stores. |
EXTREME fire hazard Absolutely no campfires or beach fires are permitted. A stray spark could set the whole island on fire.
When you use the gas barbeque, please be careful not to have it too close to the cottage or the wood railings.
If the cabin cools down and you need more heat, use the baseboard electric heaters. Please do not burn anything in the woodstove. |
Laundry Please be careful not to overload the washer or dryer- it won’t work properly. We’ve left starter detergent and other supplies. If you need more supplies, any of the stores will have them. |
Garbage We’ll be by to pick up your household garbage. Give us a call if it needs picking up. |
The lending library If you’re reading one of the paperbacks and haven’t finished it by the time you leave, you’re welcome to take it with you. Please leave a book for each one you take. |
